Choose the viewing purpose before choosing the field of view.

The European Data Protection Board’s video-device guidance addresses lawful basis, necessity, transparency, storage and security. Assessing the surveillance use is distinct from buying compliant radio hardware.

Write down the installation purpose

Identify who decides how footage is used, the lawful basis, the area in view and whether a less intrusive approach can meet the purpose. Review incidental capture of neighbours and public areas with your privacy adviser.

Set access and retention before commissioning

Define who can view or export footage, the storage location, deletion schedule, visitor information and the security settings. Include app and cloud providers in the review.

Neither the camera catalogue nor a radio test document establishes that an installation satisfies privacy law.
